The First SMU SEC Wrap-up Meetings Successfully Held
The two-month SMU SEC(Speaking English Competition) 2014 hasprovided students with a stage to show their speaking English competence. Theexcellent performance of all the candidates impress the whole campus andpracticing oral English has becoming a hot trend. To make a preparation for theSecond SEC next year, a wrap-up meeting has been held on the afternoon of Jan.14th in AdministrationBuilding Room 264. This meeting was organized jointly by Teaching AffairsOffice and CFL. Chen Yan, teacher of Teaching Affairs Office; Qian Minfang andHuang Yiqing, teachers from CFL; 9 representative candidates and 2 studentsheling organize the competition had attended the meeting.
Qian, on behalf of the member of the organizing committee,expressed her recognition of the excellent performance of all the players, shealso extended her great thanks to their support to the event. At last, she gavesome suggestions on the optimization and the schedule of the event.
All the representatives thought highly of this event whichoffered a great chance for students to communicate in English and encouragedstudents to pay more attention not only to the application of a foreignlanguage but also to its culture. Most of them have made aquaintance withfreinds who share similar interest. And by the competing on the stage, theirknowledge about the English language and culture has been consolidated. Theyalso enhance their team spirit during the whole process of the competition.
The participants had a heated discussion about the publicity,the standard to select candidates and the innovation of the form of the competition.The representatives of SEC proposed several ideas according to their ownexperience, they thought more interaction, and more alternative themes andvarious forms could be considered. This wrap-up meeting underwent in aharmonious atmosphere, it will better improve the quality of the next SEC.
Surprisingly, this competition has draw the attention andsupport from American Company Charles R Weber, a famous corporation in shippingindustry, which sponsored one of the Top Ten Candidates, Zhao Jingzhou, a 2013International Shipping major student, to carry out an internship in America onthe summer vacation.
