The Institute of Language and Culture

Established in May 2006, the Institute of Language and Culture makes contributions to researches upon the language and culture of English-speaking countries and Language Planning and Language Policy. Since it was established, this institute has shouldered the responsibility of building the discipline of English and American culture and has reached the goal of the first five-year plan. As the first institute of CFL, the institute of language and culture also foster the development of other eight institutes, including Institute of Comparison and Application of English and Chinese, Institute of Translation, Language Planning and Language Policy, etc.

Our institute has long-term and close connections with National Research Center for Foreign Language Education, Beijing Foreign Studies University, which is the core research base of Humanities and Social Science of the Ministry of Education, Chinese Research Center for Foreign Language Strategies, Shanghai International Studies University, which is the core research base of the National Language Committee, and the Research Center of China Language Strategies, Nanjing University. Our institutes have distinctive research directions of language planning and language policy, which is fully recognized by experts of this research field.

So far, our institute has completed one national social science project, two provincial and ministerial projects, one provincial and ministerial publication fund, two National Social Science Fund Project ,one Humanities and Social Sciences Planning Project of the Ministry of Education, and a major project from the key research base of the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education.

Our institute has published six monographs, two translated books , one novel, two textbooks, and more than 30 papers, of which there are more than 20 papers published in CSSCI indexed journals and three research reports submitted to the Language and Letter Department of the Ministry of Education. Our institute, working as one of the reviewers and editors of the World Language Strategy Information, has edited 30 issues of this journal together with the China Research Center of Foreign Language Education. We have achieved many awards, including the second prize of the Eighth Competition on Teaching Materials organized by East China’s university operated presses and the second prize of the 11th Philosophy and Social Science Achievements Contest in Shanghai.

 

At present, our subjects include:

Strategic research on the mutual language connectivity between China and peripheral countries

Research on language planning in new era from the perspective of country interest——comparison between American and Chinese cases ( National Social Science Fund Subject)

Research on the comparison of foreign language education and policy between America and China during 1990 to 2010 ( Humanity and Social Science Subject of the Ministry of Education)

Investigation of language situation in foreign countries (a major subject of the key research base of the Ministry of Education)

English civilization series (Three books have been published, including American Civilization, English Civilization, English Civilizations in Asia)
