Professor Pan Wenguo Talked About The Translation History Of Buddhist Scriptures With CFL Teachers and Students
On the afternoon of March 18th, Professor Pan from East ChinaNormal University, invited by CFL of SMU, gave a lecture titled “ The ThreeTopics of Translation History of Buddhist Scriptures: Reading Notes of ChenYinque on Pavilion Plexus Draft”. The lecture was chaired by professor ShangXin, Dean of CFL, in the lecture hall of College of Foreign Languages.Attendants are many young teachers and postgraduates of different majors,including MTI, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, as well as EnglishLanguage and Literature.
At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Pan accentuated theimportance of cultural study for translation, and he believed that the study oftranslation history is also the study of cultural history. Then, Professor Panexpounded such three questions as “Geyi, Heben(union version) and the world’stranslation of Chinese writings” to all teachers and students by studying andtranslating the The Pavilion Plexus In The Early Compiling Draft and ThePavilion Plexus In The Second Compiling Draft of Mr Chen Yinque. Besides,Professor Pan explained to the audience in his half vernacular language thesignificance of original works in translation study through vivid examples.Finally, Professor Pan interacted actively with students and offered studentshis recognition and encouragement for their learning enthusiasm and exploringspirits during the process of exchanging ideas.
Many students obtain new understanding about translation,especially their cognition about the original works.
