Context in Context:On the Qualities of Translators
On the morning of Mar. 18th, at the invitation ofCFL, Professor Luo Xuanmin from Department of Foreign Languges and of TsinghuaUniversity gave a lecture at CFL lecture room in the title of Context in Context:On the Qualities of Translators (Taking Early Scholars of TsinghuaUniversity as Examples). There were almostno empty saat in the lecture room.
Professormentioned some scholars from Tsinghua University, such as Qian Xuesen, LiZhengdao, Zhao Dan etc, to show us what qualities a true scholar shouldpossesses. He thought, there were four things scholars should persue. First ofall, they should seek TRUTH in order to understand the material world in arational way; Secondly, they sould be VIRTUOUS in terms of the emotional world;and they should be KIND and have strong belief in terms of the spirit world.Only when we are TRUTHFUL, VIRTUOUS and KIND, can we be a wualified scholar. Atthe same time, Professor Luo showed us some of his works to explain sometranslation strategies and the relationship between translators and theirqualities. He suggested that, a qualified translator should seek for truth andto verify his translated version in various ways to ensure the correctness ofhis translation, otherwise he may distort the original meaning to an oppositedirection..
Fromthis lecture we know that solid foundation of basic language skills is requiredfor an excellent translator, and translators should strengthen his knowledgeabout Chinese and western culture, and through which way translators can bemore creative and qualified to be translators serving for the whole world.Students present all benefit a lot from this lecture, and they are lookingforword to listening to more lectures like this.
