Professor Qu Weiguo Delivers an Academic Lecture among CFL Teachers and Students
On March 25th, 2013, an academic lecture on “Greetings in English: A Diachronic Sociolinguistic Study” was delivered in the Lecture Hall of CFL Building. Speaker Qu, Deanof College of Foreign Languages and Literatures and PhD Supervisor of FudanUniversity, mainly explores pragmatics, discourse analysis, sociolinguisticsand rhetoric. He has published several works, including Discourse Stylistics,Introducing Critical Thinking and Argumentation and so on.
The lecture was chaired by Prof. Zhang Yan, Associate Dean ofCFL in Shanghai Maritime University. Many young teachers and studentsparticipated in this activity.
At the beginning of this lecture, Prof. Qu has emphasized thegreat importance of the diachronic research to sociolinguistics. He held thatresearch on greetings in English could demonstrate this well. Then, throughanalyzing greetings in different periods, he interpreted his outcomes for manyyears. With vivid examples and plain language, Prof. Qu explained theimportance of research methods in sociolinguistics studies. Finally, heinteracted with our students and was patient to answer their questions.
The lecture providesstudents with the new realization of sociolinguistic studies, especially therecognition of greetings in different periods. Students and teachers hope thatmore similar lectures will be delivered in their campus life.
