CFL Invites Professor Lv Shisheng to Give a Lecture
On the afternoon of May 20th, CFL of our school invitedProfessor Lv Shisheng, the dean of CFL of Shanghai University of Finance andEconomics to offer guidance and give an academic lecture titled by “Yan fu’s‘faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance’ ”and “Unorthodox Translation”.Shangxin, the dean of CFL and He Shaobin, Vice dean of CFL presided over thelecture and at the same time graduates of 2014 and some undergraduates attendedthe lecture.
At thebeginning of the lecture, Shangxin, thedean of CFL gave a brief introduction about Professor LvShisheng’S academic researchfield and achievements. And then, Professor Lv Shisheng discussed about “Yanfu’s ‘faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance’”and the translation theory of“Unorthodox Translation”. In Professor Lv’s opinion, the debate about thetranslation idea of “Yan fu’s ‘faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance” wasactually the debate of the understanding of the relationship betweentranslation theory and translation practice. Some relevant research andevaluation about the three principles, the separating understanding of thesignified of it and the simple analysis of translation theory and translationpractice are due to the complexity of the essential attributes of intrinsiccharacters of translation action or the lack of awareness of universalrelationof translation action. Professor Lv Shisheng reinterpreted thesignifiedvof Yanfu’s ‘faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance’ from suchthree aspects as theory, practice and social history, and analyze therelationship between translation practice and and the historical condition of“Theory of Natural Selection” so as to clarify the inner link of “Yan fu’s‘faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance’”and the translation theory of“Unorthodox Translation”. Finally it is concluded that the Unorthodoxtranslation of “Theory of Natural Selection” is subject to the rational choiceof a certain historical period, the theoretical principles of “faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance” and the practice of “Theory of Natural Selection”are the unification of history.
Giveteachers and students enlightenment that only by well combing social realitywith their translation studies can they achieve the effect of “faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance”. At theend of the lecture, some students discussed questions in daily study withProfessor Lv and and Professor Lv was greatly impressed by students’enthusiasm.
