Welcome to apply for Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) of college of foreign languages, Shanghai Maritime University

 

With the development of China''s friendly exchanges with foreign countries, and the global popularity of Chinese culture, the Chinese language has become increasingly "hot in the world". To meet the international demand for professional Chinese language teachers, and to promote the spreading of Chinese culture, our College of Foreign Languages (CFL) of Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) has established a master''s program of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages (MTCSOL) and now warmly welcome applicants from home and abroad.  

I. About CFL

1. Teaching advantage

CFL dates back to 1965. It now consists of four undergraduate departments: English (for shipping), Translation, Business English and Japanese. So far, it has a secondary doctoral program (Maritime Language and Application), a professional program of Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI), and a first level academic program (English Language and Literature) composed of three secondary master disciplines as Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, as well as Japanese Language and Literature.



There are nearly 20 teaching and research institutions in the CFL. CFL has a strong faculty team: 50 are professors or associate professors. All teachers’ academic qualifications are master’s degree or doctoral degree.



 

For more than half a century, CFL has adhered to the social needs of developing maritime affairs, serving traffic, ocean oriented, and talents cultivation meets the social needs of the development strategies of the country, Shanghai, and the industry. Graduates with superior quality have broad employment prospects. It has become a high-level college of foreign languages with outstanding advantages in international education and distinctive maritime features.

2. Geographical advantages

SMU is located in Lin’gang New City, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, China, which is near the sea. The sea breeze is fresh and the climate is pleasant. It can be described as the back garden of Shanghai. The campus features elegant scenery, prosperous vegetation and aquatic birds. This is an ideal place for study.



SMU is adjacent to Dishui Lake, the largest man-made coastal lake in China. It is surrounded by attractions such as the China Maritime Museum and Disneyland. Polar Halls, ski resorts, and planetariums will also be located.

3. Campus culture


SMU has a multi-function lecture hall, which is convenient for students to watch new movies at low prices. In addition, sometimes there are many artistic activities.

There are various types of sports venues with complete facilities, professional swimming pools, indoor tennis courts, light stadiums, dragon boat teams, and sailing teams.


There are all kinds of clubs and associations, such as playing musical instruments and singing, playing chess, calligraphy and painting, playing basketball and volleyball. There is always one for you.

 

There are lots of colorful campus activities for you to showcase your talent, such as singer contest, recitation contest, and English dubbing contest.

II. About the Program

1. Subject name:

Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

2. Professional direction:

a) Comparison between Chinese and foreign languages

By comparing Chinese with English and some Southeast Asian languages, this major presents the unique typological characteristics of Chinese, thus promoting the effective teaching of Chinese.

b) Maritime Chinese education

This major aims to train the students to use Chinese for communication in shipping, ports, and logistics through the teaching and training of relevant Chinese vocabulary, expressions, and textual features in these fields.

c) “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” culture and education

By explaining and discussing the cultures of countries along the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”, and analyzing the importance of the communication between different cultures, students’ ability of effective cross-cultural communication is to be cultivated.

3. Enrollment:

15 students

4. Educational system:

2.5 years (full-time)

1.5 years of course study, 1 year of teaching practice and graduation thesis writing.

5. Tuition fee:

RMB 15,000 / year, total tuition fee: RMB 37,500

6. Qualifications

a) Graduates with bachelor’s degree from domestic universities.

b) Foreign students who have a bachelor degree or above and have passed the new HSK- level 5 or level 4 (or equivalent language level after training in SMU).

c) In good physical and mental condition.

d) Other application conditions shall refer to SMU’s 2019 graduate recruitment guidelines.

7. About Admission:

a) Preliminary examination:

Please refer to the enrollment information of 2019 from the website of SMU graduate school and special procedures for applicants abroad are to be published this fall. 

b) Interview:

All Applicants shall take part in interviews on comprehensive quality and  Chinese communication skills.

c) Admission:

The result of admission is based on the scores of preliminary examination about specialized courses and the interviews.

III. Personnel cultivation

1. Cultivation target

MTCSOL is a professional degree linked to the profession of international Chinese teachers. The main teaching goal is to cultivate specific talents who are passionate about Chinese international education and Chinese culture. Proficient use of Chinese, culture teaching skills and intercultural communication ability are mastered by competent students for the Chinese teaching task. 



2. Cultivation mode


The curriculum is combined with the practice of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages.

a) Classroom teaching, discussion, case analysis, teaching simulation and other methods are used in those courses; some domestic and foreign experts are invited to teach relevant courses.

b) Students can take part in Chinese teaching or supplementary teaching domestically and overseas.




3. Cultivation characteristics

a) Language features: the teachers in the FLC have the educational background in English, Japanese, French, Russian, German and Spanish and so on, thus they have the innate advantages to communicate with international students. In addition, the superior language teaching environment can help students to foster outstanding foreign language ability, understand multi language and culture, and improve their individual comprehensive strength and competitive prowess.

b) The courses taught by the teachers in the university are combined with the joint guidance of supervisors both on and off the campus. The teachers recruited outside the school are from East China Normal University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and other colleges and universities. All of them are well-known scholars and experts in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

c) Double certificates: in accordance with academic qualifications once the thesis has been passed, a master''s graduate certificate and Master''s degree in MTCSOL will be issued. 




4. Employment direction

SMU is home to ports, shipping, logistics, transportation and other popular sectors.

Graduates have professional advantages such as language, communication, maritime background, etc.

The employment prospects include and not limited to: Chinese teaching in various schools domestically and overseas; vocations related to language and culture transmission and communication in various functional departments, foreign trade institutions, press and publishing units and other enterprises; related work in navigation, ports and educational institutions in the countries along the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”, such as Chinese teaching, foreign cultural communication and cooperation between different countries.
