Cultivation program for Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) of College of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Maritime University

(Application of full-time International Students)

I. Cultivation target
MTCSOL is a professional degree linked to the profession of international Chinese teachers. The main teaching goal is to cultivate specific talents who are passionate about Chinese international education and Chinese culture. Proficient use of Chinese, culture teaching skills and intercultural communication ability are mastered by competent students for the Chinese teaching task. Here are some specific requirements:
1. The students have good professional quality and professional ethics;
2. The students are with better Chinese teaching skills;
3. The students have a better understanding of Chinese culture and the ability to integrate Chinese and foreign cultures;
4. The students have better intercultural communication abilities;
5. The students have the capabilities of language and cultural projects organization, management and coordination.
II. Enrollment and qualifications
1. Enrollment
1) Graduates with bachelor’s degree from domestic universities.
2) Foreign students who have a bachelor’s degree or above, have passed the new HSK- level 5 or level 4 (or equivalent language level after training in SMU), and are in good physical and mental condition.
2. Admission examination
The application materials provided have been reviewed and approved by relevant departments to meet the admission requirements. The interview focuses on the comprehensive quality of students, Chinese communication skills and so on.
III. Educational system and study years
Educational system is generally two years, and the longest duration of study is not more than 5 years. In principle, the application for graduation in advance is not accepted.
IV. Cultivation mode and assessment method
1. Cultivation mode
1) The curriculum is combined with the practice of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages is linked to the dissertation of Chinese culture. The courses taught by the teachers in the university are combined with the joint guidance of supervisors both on and off the campus.
2) According to the cultivation mode of MTCSOL, the educational process highlights the composite and applied characteristics of this field. Classroom teaching, discussion, case analysis, teaching simulation and other methods are used in those courses; some domestic and foreign experts are invited to teach relevant courses.
3) The curriculum study is closely combined with the practice of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. Under the guidance of the supervisors, students participate in the teaching or auxiliary teaching of Chinese at home and abroad, so as to strengthen the cultivation of teaching practice abilities. 
2. Assessment method
1) Curriculum assessment
The score of the exam uses the hundred percentage point system and is divided into 5 grades, below 59 points, 60~69, 70~79, 80~89 and 90~100, corresponding respectively to grades: failed, passed, medium, good and excellent; the results were divided into qualified and unqualified.
2) Mid-term assessment
After the completion of the course learning stage, the graduate students of professional degree in two-year study must finish the mid-term assessment at the latest in the end of the second term or the first two weeks at beginning of the third term. The measures refer to the “regulations on the mid-term assessment of graduate students”. The qualified students in mid-term assessment can proceed to the degree.
V. Curriculum and credit requirements
At least 38 credits should be completed, including 6 credits for common courses, 20 credits for professional required courses, at least 4 credits for professional electives, 8 credits for professional practice, and requirements for various courses and credits as follows: (the schedule of the curriculum is shown in the attached table).

Graduate students who have defects in interdisciplinary or basic theory or professional knowledge and need to take appropriate courses after enrollment are required to take 2 related additional courses of undergraduate courses without credit.
VI. Professional practice (8 credits)
1. Teaching practice methods
1) Teaching practice is held at various schools and educational institutions at home and abroad;
2) Intensive practice is combined with sectional practice, and the time for practice is not less than half a year.
2. The management of teaching practice
1) During the internship, the school should arrange the teacher to instruct it. The graduate students should submit the practice plan and guarantee the quality and quantity to complete the professional practice. The practice summary report should be submitted at the end of the internship.
2) The schools for the internship will make comments based on the student''''s internship performance.
3. Social practice and assessment
The graduate students should actively participate in the academic conferences, teacher training and selection tests held by the base and school and encourage the active participation in all kinds of social practice activities of the internal and external organizations. The base carries on the comprehensive appraisal according to the concrete situation in which the graduate students develop the social practice activity.
VII. Requirements for Academic Dissertations
Graduate students should submit a dissertation not less than 15000 words. Thesis topics should be closely integrated with the practice of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages and have practical value. The form of dissertation can be thematic research, research report, teaching experiment report, typical case analysis, teaching design, etc. The cultivation of MTCSOL carries out the "double supervisors system" in school and outside school. It absorbs the frontline experts in international Chinese teaching (especially in primary and secondary schools). They are with advanced professional technical posts or doctorate and master''''s degree and involved in the thesis guidance.
VIII. Degree awarding
The graduate students who complete the course study in the cultivation program, pass the all the examinations, successfully defend their thesis and conform to the relevant regulations of school roll, are awarded a Master''''s graduate certificate; the graduate students who pass the review of professional degree evaluation groups, the deliberation of the professional degree assessment sub-committee, and get the approval of the school degree evaluation committee, will be issued a Master''''s degree in MTCSOL and Master''''s degree certificate.

Note: the graduate student of professional degree must complete 38 credits, complete the base practice of the cultivation plan (attend the professional practice in the base at the school level and above) and other necessary process. They can enter the graduation thesis writing stage only after passing the thesis proposal presentation. The Research Report of 1.5 thousand words must be completed before the thesis defense.
