The Institute of English-Chinese Contrastive Studies and Applications
The Institute of English-Chinese Contrastive Studies and Applications was established in May, 2010, with Prof. Pan Wenguo as the honorary director and Prof. Wang Juquan as consultant. The institute is joined by Prof. Shang Xin, Prof. Zhang Yan, Dr. Geng Qiang, Dr. Wang Lei and Dr. Ma Zheng.
Research on English-Chinese contrastive studies has a cloze relationship with linguistics theory, language teaching practice and translation practice, to which the domestic academy has paid great attention for a long time. Some senior scholars, like Wang Juquan, Zuo Biao, Zheng Lixin, have made endeavors in English-Chinese Contrastive Studies, which laid the foundation for the further development. Due to their efforts, this field of study of our institute has influenced the domestic academy to some degree.
Our research on English-Chinese contrastive studies and translation enjoys popularity in this field of study. After China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese (CACSEC) was founded in 1994, it will hold national or international academic seminar every two years, which promotes the prosperous growth of China’s English-Chinese contrastive studies. Professor Wang Juquan was the vice-president of the association and now is the permanent member. Professor Zuo Biao was the leader of the Language and Culture subject and the permanent member. Professor Shang Xin is the vice secretary general of the association and the permanent member.
In October, 2016, the 7th National Symposium of the CACSEC was held in Yantai. Three professor from our college, namely Wang Juquan, Zuo Biao and Shang Xin, delivered keynote speeches which accounted for one third of whole presentations. In December, 2009, the First High-level Forum on the subject building of English-Chinese contrastive studies and translation research was held in our college and achieved a great success. In October, 2010, CACSEC determined to publish transactions, English-Chinese contrastive studies and translation. The editorial department is set in the Institute of English-Chinese Contrastive Studies and Applications. In October, 2012, CACSEC held the 10th national academic seminar in Wuhan. Professor Shang Xin gave a keynote speech during that seminar. In November, 2013, our college succeeded to hold “ The First Ph.Date Forum on English-Chinese Contrastive Studies and Translation. In November, 2015, our college undertook “ The Second High-level Forum on the subject building of English-Chinese contrastive studies and translation research. The Institute of English-Chinese Contrastive Studies and Applications has undertaken to edit the Association Correspondence and has made great contributions to the development of the association.
During May, 2013 to May, 2016, our research group was acknowledged by SMU as one of the academic innovation groups. Our research group includes Shang Xin as the director, Zhang Yan as the vice director, and Wang Lei, Geng Qiang and Ma Zheng. We received RMB 450,000 as research fund during those three years. Our group has reaped abundant fruit. For example, professor Shang Xin was responsible for a project from the Humanities and Social Science of the Ministry of Education and one from the Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Fund Project. Wang Lei and Ma Zheng each undertakes one Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Fund Project. Geng Qiang received a project from the Humanities and Social Science of the Ministry of Education. In addition to those individual achievements, our research group published two English-Chinese Contrastive Studies and Applications volumes. Besides, our members published many high-quality papers in Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Journal of Foreign Languages, Modern Foreign Languages, etc. During September, 2008 to May, 2012, professor Shang Xin took charge of a National Social Science Fund Project and achieved an excellent result. In December, 2014, the book English-Chinese Tense and Aspect Contrastive Studies and Translation Strategies written by professor Shang Xin received the 19th Shanghai Scholarly Publication Fund and was awarded the Second Prize of the 13th Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Contest. All of these achievements show that our college has great influence on the field of English-Chinese Contrastive Studies.

The Institute meets the demands of the “Road and Belt Initiative”, the building of Shanghai International Shipping Center and the maritime features of our university. We will spare no effort to make our institute an outstanding one in the field of English-Chinese Contrastive Studies.
