Measuresfor the Implementation on Construction of (cultivating) Excellent Undergraduate Teaching Team of Foreign LanguageCollege (trialimplementation)

 In order to carry out Opinions of Shanghai Maritime University undergraduate implementationprojects of teaching quality and teaching reform (the No.31 documentwritten by SMU teaching affairs office in 2008), strengthen the construction ofundergraduate teaching, build an efficient team work mechanism, raise theteachers’ quality and teaching ability in our college, and to ensure ourcollege undergraduate teaching quality keeps improving. The collegeParty-government conference negotiated and decided to focus on the teaching andconstruction of following undergraduate curriculums: common courses (includingseries courses), basic disciplinary courses (including series courses), andprofessional courses (including series courses), select and foster a batch ofexcellent teaching team with high teaching quality, well-structured faculty andfruitful teaching achievements. The following are the concrete implementationmeasures:

1.      The aim of constructing the teaching team

In terms of the construction of excellentundergraduate teaching team of Foreign Language College, it aims to pushforward the reform of teaching contents and methods, promote the teachingresearch and discussion and the exchange of experience, explore the teachingresources; promote reform of the mode of training foreign language talents,improve the teaching quality, enhance students' innovation spirit and practiceability. It focus on teaching projects and consolidate their achievements, toimprove the teaching level; promote the strategy of “combine of the senior, middle-agedand young teachers” and pass on experience in teaching team, reinforce thetraining of young teachers, to improve the overall quality of teachers in ourcollege.

 2.The basic requirements of the teaching team

 2.1The Leader. In principle, theleader of teaching team should be a professor or an associate professor who isexperienced and did many researches on undergraduate teaching, and with richexperience in scientific researches. The leader can persist in first-line undergraduateteaching, and obtains efficient teaching results, deep academic attainments andinnovation consciousness, acquire a spirit of unity and cooperation and theability of organization, management and coordination. A professor or anassociate professor can only serve one teaching team.

2.2 Team composition. According to the concrete situation ofdiscipline and specialty, take curriculum (series of courses) or specializedcourses as platform, to form a teaching team in the teaching reform andpractice; the team should have clear development goals and team spirit; theage, title and education background of team members should be structuredreasonable.

2.3 Teaching. Combining teaching with the development of society andeconomy, to get acquaintance with the status of discipline (professional) andindustry, keep up with discipline (Professional) frontier, update teachingcontent in time. Making use of scientific teaching method, advanced teachingmeasures, paying attention to practical teaching, guide students to learnactively and engage in research-oriented study and innovative practice, developstudents’ interests in and abilities to discover, analyze and solve problems.In teaching, the team leader should have a strong awareness of quality, andtake complete, effective and sustainable teaching quality management measures,to reach the teaching effect without teaching accident occurred in the teammembers.

2.4 Teaching research. The teachers should have taken activelypart in the reform and innovation of teaching, for example the projects abovethe university level, or the reform of key and high quality courses.

2.5 Teaching material construction. The teachers should attach importance toteaching material construction and research and have been undertaken teachingmaterial construction projects of his discipline (major).

3. Obligations and goals of the teachingteam

The teaching team shouldfulfill following obligations and goals:

3.1 The team should complete the teaching tasks andensure the teaching quality; theaverage score of evaluation of teaching of the members in the team should begood.

3.2 The team should makeinnovations in education and teaching, carry out reforms in teaching contentsand methods and in curriculum system, to form specific teaching and reform planand make achievements, as well as compile the cooperation form of the teamduring construction.

3.3 The team should fulfillteaching construction tasks in courses, textbooks and practice with remarkableresults. During the construction, the team should apply and obtain or finish atleast one teaching project above university level (including) (the projectshould be applied in team).

3.4 Paying high attention tonurture young teachers to raise the overall teaching level of the team. In allkinds of teachers’ teaching skill competition, the enrollment rate and prizerate should rank top in the college.

3.5 Make teaching researches toachieve teaching results. During construction, the team member should public atleast one paper about teaching researches on average, or compile a suit oftextbook in team.

4. Management measures of the teaching team

4.1 Application and identification: the college organizesexperts to evaluate and screen the application materials; the collegeParty-government conference presents the identification.

4.2 The college will grant the excellent undergraduateteaching team certain financial assistance, to help the team to make teachingresearches and achievements, compile and publish textbooks, nurture youngteachers and teachers' vocational studies.

4.3 The construction(nurturing) period of excellent teaching team last 2years. The college willcheck and accept the team according to its construction aims and layout,implementation of annual plan. The examination and acceptance focus on thequality of teaching, mainly on curriculum construction, teaching achievements,science researches, textbook compiling, talents nurturing and contribution tospecialty construction, and put emphasis on symbolic achievements.

4.4 The college will optimize and determine the keyconstruction teaching team based on team building progress, and createconditions to recommend the team to a higher level teaching team, to the schooland to Shanghai. In principle, the team recommend to the university should begenerated from the college, and the team recommend to the municipality shouldbe generated from the university-level teaching team.
