Lecture Introduction:
Typical conditional expressions in Japanese are と, ば, たら, なら, etc. They are used in various senses and form a close relationship with each other. Some of them can be interchanged in some sentences, but sometimes they cannot be interchanged, or there is a difference in the sense of the interchange. Therefore, Japanese conditional expressions have always been one of the key points and difficulties in Japanese language learning. This lecture explains the usage of と, ば, たら and なら in terms of assumptions, general conditions and definite conditions, the characteristics of their usage, restrictions, whether or not question words can appear in the preceding and following items, and the identification of similarities and differences.
