Frontier Lecture: Metaphors and Metaphorical Translation Strategies in the Perspective of Cognitive Translation

Lecture Introduction: Translation studies are undergoing a paradigm shift in research, and cognitive translation studies have expanded the frontiers and boundaries of translation studies and become a new paradigm in translation studies. Metaphor is the core concept of cognitive linguistics, and translation has been highly concerned by cognitive translation science and is also the core research object of cognitive translation science; cognitive translation science focuses on the cognitive processing and cognitive transformation in the process of metaphor translation, concerns and explains the translator's understanding of the semantics of metaphor, and focuses on the strategy selection in metaphor translation. The lecture uses the theory of cognitive translation to explore the cognitive mechanism of metaphor translation and explain the strategy of metaphor translation and uses a lot of examples to illustrate and exemplify how to understand and translate metaphors under the framework of cognitive translation.

Lecturer Profile:

Lu Zhi, Ph.D., doctoral supervisor, second professor, a full-time researcher at the Research Center of Translation Studies of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, a key base of humanities and social sciences research in Guangdong Province, whose research field is applied linguistics. In 2008, he was appointed as a doctoral supervisor in Applied Linguistics at Jinan University, and in 2011, he was appointed as the “Yugang Bao Lecture Professor” at Ningbo University, and in 2015, he was appointed as the Yunshan Professor at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. He was appointed as Yunshan Distinguished Scholar of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in 2015 (renewed in 2019) and recognized as a doctoral supervisor in translation (cognitive translation) and a postdoctoral supervisor in cognitive science and language research. He has published more than 60 papers in domestic and international academic journals such as Cortex, Brain and Language, System, Cross Languages and Cultures, Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Foreign Languages, Modern Foreign Languages, Contemporary Linguistics, etc. He has published eight academic monographs and translations and edited one national planning textbook (Introduction to Applied Linguistics). He has published eight academic monographs and translations, edited one national textbook (Introduction to Applied Linguistics), and co-edited two national textbooks. He has hosted and completed two National Social Science Foundation projects and six provincial-level humanities and social science projects. His current research projects include Research on Translation Process under the Threshold of Cognitive Translation, Research on the Reform and Development of Foreign Language Education in China, a major research project of the Ministry of Education, and a project of Guangdong High-level Talents. Theoretical and Model Construction of Cognitive Translation Studies. He is also a member of the editorial committee of the 11th Five-Year Plan Textbook for General Higher Education, a member of the editorial committee of Cognitive Linguistics Series of Higher Education Publishing House, a special reviewer of the Evaluation Center for Academic Degrees and Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of Education, a correspondence reviewer of the National Social Science Foundation of China, a correspondence and result appraisal reviewer of the Humanities and Social Sciences Project of the Ministry of Education, and a member of the editorial committees of Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Foreign Languages, Modern Foreign Languages, and Journal of the PLA Foreign Language Institute. He is the executive director of the Chinese Society of Cognitive Linguistics, the Chinese Society of Cognitive Neurolinguistics, the Chinese Professional Committee of Psycholinguistics, and the Chinese Society of Language Education Research, the vice president of the Chinese Professional Committee of Second Language Processing, the Chinese Society of Cognitive Translation Research, and the Chinese Society of Translation and Cognition Research, and the deputy editor-in-chief of the academic collection Translation Research and Teaching.
