Lecture Topic: Language Typology and Translation: Reflections of a Translator

Lecturer Profile: Professor Yongxian Luo received his Ph.D. in Historical Comparative Linguistics, Southeast Asian Linguistics, and Linguistic Typology from the Australian National School. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne. He is a Ph.D. candidate in linguistics and translation. He is an invited reviewer for several international academic journals and international academic publishers, an invited reviewer for the National Science Foundation (NSF), a reviewer for the Hong Kong Research Foundation; and an invited reviewer for the Ministry of Education (linguistics discipline).
Lecture Introduction: The talk discusses the relevance of linguistic typology to translation, with reflections from a translation practitioner. Issues to be discussed include the nature of translation, indeterminacy of translation, discourse structure, lexical-semantic, and how linguistic typology may contribute to translation studies.
