"Li-an Old Hero, Costraint: Senior Translator Dialogue Forum" was Held at Shanghai Maritime University

In order to promote exchanges among academics, carry forward the spirit of translators, and promote the dissemination of translators' academic thoughts, the College of Foreign Languages organized the "Li-an Old Hero, Costraint: Senior Translator Dialogue Forum" on September 23, 2023 in the Foreign Languages Building. This conference was jointly organized by Shanghai Society of Scientific and Technical Translation and the College of Foreign Languages. More than 10 experts and scholars in the field of translation from Fudan University, Shanghai International Studies University and other universities, as well as more than 40 teachers and students from both inside and outside the university gathered at Shanghai Maritime University to attend the event.


This forum is a part of Promoting the Scientific Spirit of Translators, Concentrating and Gathering Talents Series of Lectures of Shanghai Society of Scientific and Technological Translation, which plans to publicize the scientific spirit of Zuo Biao and Fang Mengzhi, two veteran translators, among the members of Shanghai colleges and universities by means of seminars and roving exhibitions.


Prof. Hu Kaibao, Chairman of Shanghai Society of Scientific and Technological Translation, delivered a video speech, in which he highly praised Prof. Zuo Biao's career as a translator and his contributions to the Society, and hoped that young teachers and students would learn from Prof. Zuo Biao's scholarly spirit.


He Li, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the university, said in her speech that translation plays an important role in economic and social development, and in the face of the new situation of the shipping industry moving towards artificial intelligence, it is necessary to vigorously carry forward the spirit of translators, endeavor to promote the advancement of translation technology, and actively establish a maritime corpus based on the maritime industry, facing the sea, strengthening cultural exchanges, and telling a good Chinese story.


Prof. Zuo Biao of the College of Foreign Languages, a senior translator, delivered a keynote speech from three aspects: translation education and teaching, translation and academic research, and translation and cultural communication.


Prof. Zhang Ailing, Secretary General of the National Steering Committee of Graduate Education for Translation Degree and Dean of the College of Advanced Translation of Shanghai International Studies University, Weng Guoqiang, Deputy Secretary General of Shanghai Society of Scientific and Technological Translation, Prof. Zhang Yan, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Crafts of Shanghai Maritime University, Prof. He Gangqiang of the College of Foreign Languages and Crafts of Fudan University, Prof. Liu Qin, President of the College of Foreign Languages of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, and Prof. Mao Liqun, President of the College of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jianqiao University, Prof. Tao Youlan of the College of Foreign Languages of Fudan University and Prof. Zhao Hong, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages of East China University of Science and Technology, made speeches successively, reviewing the educational and academic careers of the veteran translators and discussing the development of translation career.


The forum mainly focused on translation and international communication, translation and public diplomacy, innovation and practice of maritime foreign language translation education, theoretical self-confidence of Chinese translation studies, the transformative power of translation, the role and responsibility of translators in the era of globalization, and the inheritance and innovation of the spirit of translators in the context of new technology, etc. Experts and scholars at the conference actively participated in the speeches and discussions, and fully affirmed the significant contributions and influence of the old translators, represented by Prof. Zuo Biao, to the spirit and academic thoughts of translators, and at the same time discussed how to promote the inheritance and carrying forward of the spirit and academic thoughts of translators as well as to play a more active role in promoting the development of the translation career in China.
