The College of Foreign Languages Held a Symposium on Corpus Construction and Discipline Development

To promote the construction of foreign language disciplines and majors and improve the quality of training foreign language professionals, on January 12, the College of Foreign Languages held a symposium on Corpus Construction and Discipline Development. Professor Hu Kaibao, Assistant to the President of Shanghai International Studies University and President of Corpus Research Institute, and Zhang Kai, engineer of Corpus Research Institute were invited to attend the symposium. Li Huadong, head of the foreign language and Literature program, attended the meeting, which was presided over by President Zhang Yan.


Professor Hu Kaibao introduced the construction objectives, structure, language data, construction and operation mechanism, and construction work arrangement of the national language data co-construction and sharing platform. He said that computing power, algorithms, data, and scenarios are important organizational parts of the digital economy era. The construction of maritime corpus, maritime language data, and its application play an important role in promoting the development of foreign language disciplines, scientific research, and the development of the shipping industry. Professor Hu Kaibao also demonstrated the major-country diplomatic discourse platform with Chinese characteristics and the intelligent multi-language teaching and research platform and encouraged everyone to carry out scientific research and teaching on the platform.

 

Professor Zhang Yan introduced the maritime language resource Library of Shanghai Maritime University from the aspects of the research team, project progress, corpus composition, and language model. She stressed that English is an international maritime communication language stipulated by international law, and the shipping industry has the characteristics of a long industrial chain, wide radiation, and strong internationality. Based on the maritime language resource library, has important theoretical and practical significance to improve the efficiency of maritime management and enhance maritime security. Yuan Yu, Pan Yun, and Zhao Quan exchanged views on maritime language and application research data platform construction, maritime ship-shore oral communication corpus construction, language data model technology and other aspects.

 

This symposium has laid a solid foundation for further promoting the innovation and development of foreign language disciplines. By sharing experience and discussing cutting-edge technologies and research results, the participants provided rich opportunities for ideas collision and cooperation to improve the quality of foreign language professional training and promote the development of the discipline. It is expected that such exchange activities can become a good starting point for the development of the discipline in the future, and promote the discipline of foreign language to achieve more remarkable results in corpus construction and discipline development.
