To further strengthen international education and promote the goal of Foreign language + maritime talent training, the College of Foreign Languages actively docking with the maritime industry and international organizations, recently, two students went to the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (Hong Kong) and Typhoon Committee (Macau) to carry out internship practice.
Introduction of internship unit:
The Typhoon Committee is an intergovernmental organization jointly chaired by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to improve and coordinate disaster preparedness planning and measures in Asia and the Pacific to mitigate human and property losses caused by natural disasters, particularly typhoons.
The Hong Kong Shipowners Association, established in 1957, represents the interests of Hong Kong's shipping community and promotes Hong Kong as a leading international shipping center. Over the past 65 years, the Hong Kong Shipowners Association has grown to become one of the largest shipowners associations in the world, is a member of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the Asian Shipowners Association (ASA), and works closely with various maritime organizations.

During this period, I assisted in receiving Mr. Wang, Deputy Secretary-General of Shanghai Municipal Government, and his delegation, participated in upgrading the English website of Typhoon Committee, simplifying the content of the website, editing the report of the 56th Annual meeting of Typhoon Committee, unifying the format, proofreading the content, and finally binding the report into a book. Su Wan Qi, Grade 22 English (Shipping) undergraduate student: The internship program of Hong Kong Shipowners Association lasts from July to August and lasts for 1 month. The internship is rich in content, covering the operation and management of shipping associations, the practice of shipping operations management, and other matters requiring assistance. During the internship, I participated in a lot of shipping English translation work. Includes translation of documents such as contracts, reports, minutes of meetings, etc. In addition to translation work, I also participated in some project management work related to shipping. Such as participating in the development of project plan, project progress tracking, team cooperation, etc. In this process, I learned how to communicate effectively with team members, how to solve problems in the project, and how to adjust the project plan to ensure the smooth progress of the project. This internship can give full play to my professional strengths, lay a foundation for smooth internship in the future, and better improve my understanding of the maritime field and the shipping industry.
Perception of internship:
Ms. Yuan Jing said, I cherish this opportunity to work as an intern in the Secretariat of the Typhoon Committee (now based in Macau). This internship not only enabled me to realize my long-standing desire to work in an international organization, but also, as an English major, enabled me to truly apply what I have learned. First, the working language in the Secretariat is mainly English. Second, the secretariat is composed of a diverse staff, including senior secretaries from Portugal, meteorologists from Hong Kong, and Korean students who are also interns with me, so daily communication is conducted in English. Finally, Macao is a city deeply integrated with China and the West, with rich world cultural heritage and people from all over the world's cultural backgrounds. I take this opportunity to personally experience and feel the collision and integration of different cultures.
Su Wan Qi said, Through this internship, I have a deeper understanding of the shipping industry. I learned about how the shipping industry works, future trends and so on. In the course of our conversation, my boss stressed that the current shipping industry has encountered a good opportunity. On the one hand, the status of women is rising, and the shipping industry will welcome women to shine in the shipping field with an open attitude; At the same time, the requirements of green environmental protection need more young effective force to inject fresh blood into the industry. In short, the internship experience in Hong Kong Shipowners Association is a valuable experience in my life. It makes me grow in practice and I am full of confidence and expectation for the future. In the future study and work, I will continue to strive to contribute to the development of the shipping industry! Finally, I would like to thank the school for giving me this internship opportunity and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association for providing me with guidance and help!
